Objectives:To refine and use molecular techniques to assess the extent of genetic variation within and between populations of mangroves; to assess the extent to which desirable traits are genetically determined; to develop screening and selection procedures for identifying desirable genotypes of selected mangroves; to develop and refine protocols for the routine micropropagation of mangroves; to develop procedures for the selection, identification and large-scale propagation of desirable mangrove germplasm; to assist national authorities to transfer results of this project to agencies, communities or enterprises directly involved in rehabilitation or afforestation projects; and to assess the effects of disturbance and habitat fragmentation on the genetic diversity and structure of two mangrove species with contrasting reproductive strategies.
