Objectives:The Transport Rehabilitation and Maintenance Project, will improve roads, and water drainage in six towns of Belize.
During the first phase of construction, most of the adverse impacts will be associated to noise, dust, accessibility, traffic disruption, including potentially high adverse impacts on archaeological sites. In addition, during the second, and third phases of construction, adverse impacts on critical habitats will occur.
The Environmental Assessment (EA) will present recommendations for mitigation measures to reduce adversity, and ensure adequate environmental practices. Measures for the first phase of construction suggest the establishment of alternate routes, noise abatement, and careful drainage design planning, in accordance with established construction practices, and, during excavation, and construction, archaeological sites should be specifically monitored for preservation purposes.
The provision of training to the Town Boards' staff in planning, and maintenance, will be recommended, as well as small-scale assistance in urban, and land-use planning.
Monitoring of the effects of dredging on the beaches will be highly recommended, to protect coastal stability. The concern over the area's ecology, and bio-diversity, particularly, mangrove habitats, seasonal swamp forests, and its endangered species, suggest the acquisition of a wide corridor to ensure environmental protection.
