Objectives:1). To raise awareness among the coastal communities, in order to promote the sustainable use of mangrove forests; 2). To build the capacity of the Sindh and Balochistan Forest Departments; and 3). To provide technical backstopping to the agencies responsible for the conservation of mangrove forests.
Under this project 5000 hectares of mangroves were regenerated in the Indus Delta and Somiani Balochistan. Forest officers were provided training in mangrove forestry and maintenance of existing plantation. A social forestry initiative in coastal villages raised community plantations comprising of 50,000 plants. An Environmental Awareness Programme was also included in the project that organized NGO/Community orientation workshops and conducted an advocacy campaign on the issue. Furthermore, institutional and technical support regarding mangrove forestation was provided to several government departments.
