Objectives:1) Rehabilitate of mangrove plantation on the selected most degraded sites of FOTCO; 2) Build the capacity of a select number of FOTCO staff in mangrove plantation and management; 3) Identify the appropriate approach, mechanisms and techniques to rehabilitate and maintain mangrove cover in FOTCO area; and 4) Develop a mutually beneficial partnership between FOTCO and IUCN, aimed at addressing the long-term environmental management issues of Port Qasim.
During the first phase of the project 7,865 plants (a number that exceeded the initial target of 5,000 plants) were planted along the sand dunes. A total of 25,000 container plants were raised in the nursery established for this purpose. In the second phase three block mangrove plantations were raised comprising of Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops tagal species.
