Objectives:In order to reduce the dependence of the local population on mangrove resources for fishing, fuel wood and fodder collection as well as to provide an alternative source of income for them, IUCN-Pakistan undertook several initiatives including the introduction of apiculture in the Indus Delta. It was found that the honey bee-keeping project was environmentally feasible and economically viable. With the assistance of NORAD and UNDP more than 100 fishermen were imparted training in basic silviculture and honey bee-keeping in coastal villages along the Sindh and Balochistan coasts. At present many fishermen are involved in apiculture to supplement their income during slack season.
